Last year I participated for the first time in an all-day fundraiser called Marathon of Sport, where teams compete alongside local Special Olympic athletes in a variety of sports such as beach volleyball, european handball, ultimate, bocce, soccer, Special Olympics Functional Training, BUMP, benchball and an obstacle course. All funds raised at the event are donated to the Special Olympics Canada Foundation.

At the time I was several months pregnant, and experiencing unpleasant bouts of (all day) morning sickness. Instead of competing, I sat on the sidelines and cheered for my team and our new friends, two local Special Olympic athletes named Alex and Alison. As "team cheerleader", I had time to chat with our athletes' families. I was touched to hear stories of how the Special Olympics and Marathon of Sport have made such a positive impact in their lives. I could see it for myself in the smiling faces of Alex and Alison, the joy and wonder that radiated from within. It was contagious. By the end of the day, our whole team was grinning from ear to ear. I cannot say enough good things about this wonderful event and how emotional and rewarding it is, not just for the Special Olympic athletes, but for their families and for us as participants.

This year, I'll be bringing my 7 month old daughter along with me as assistant cheerleader. I know that she'll be making friends all day and will grow to love this event as much as I do. Please help make our day by giving generously and if you would like to get involved in any other capacity, feel free to reach out to me!
